I built a hollow cow once so a queen could satisfy a desire she couldn’t name aloud, and it worked exactly as made — which was the trouble. I did not ask what it would hold before I built it. I have since learned to ask first, of everything: the maze, the wings, whatever comes to my bench next. Not because I always liked the answer — I built the maze knowing it would hold a horror, and built it well anyway. Bring me what you’re making. I want to know what it does once you’ve let it go.
